AI for Belgian SMEs: a practical starting point

Tried a chatbot and felt underwhelmed? Here is a grounded way for a Belgian SME to actually get value from AI.

By Bernard Van Isacker · O-zone CommV

AI has gone from novelty to normal for small and medium-sized businesses across Belgium. Yet plenty of teams have tried a chatbot, felt underwhelmed, and quietly parked it. If that is you, here is a practical way to start.

Begin with your real tasks

Do not start with the tool; start with the work. List the repetitive, time-consuming tasks your team does each week: drafting quotes, summarising documents, answering the same customer questions, tidying data. Those are your candidates.

Sort them: automate, assist, avoid

Some tasks AI can take a first pass at (assist), a few it can largely handle with a person checking (automate), and some it should not touch at all: anything high-stakes, regulated, or involving personal data (avoid). Sorting honestly is half the value.

Keep personal data out of public tools

This is the single most important rule, and it matters as much for GDPR as for trust: no client or personal data goes into public AI tools. Use approved tools, and remove identifying details first.

Keep a person accountable

AI drafts; people decide. A short human review before anything is sent or published keeps quality and credibility intact. It is the approach behind every system we build.
